Zero EffectSmart dialogue, appealing performances and a brisk pace more than make up for a certain aloofness in Kasdan's deconstruction of the hardboiled private-detective yarn. Daryl Zero (Pullman) is a high-class investigator who is too reticent to meet his clients face to face, so he employs a front man (Stiller). But when he is asked to investigate the alleged blackmailing of a wealthy businessman (O'Neal) he finds himself personally involved. In this particular case it's not the little grey cells that are strained but the heartstrings, as the self-conscious sleuth forms an emotional attachment with his chief suspect (Dickens). |
