In `60s New Zealand, at the bottom of the world, Burt Munro takes a 1920 Indian motorcycle and, delightfully without resources other than his own obsession and a Kiwi #8 wire mentality, spends his retirement rebuilding the bike and following his dream to go to Speed Week at Salt Lake in Utah. Under funded, without the support of a team and against all the odds he not only makes it to Bonneville, he sets a world land spend record, not once, but again and again.
A must see movie
I saw this film in a small 40 seat cinema in New Zealand and the mixed age audience loved it. we were kept spellbound by the story of one mans perseverance in fulfilling his dream of taking the land speed record for under 1000cc motorcycles. Girls- don't be put off- it was a warm, funny, and inspiring story and Anthony Hopkins was excellent in the main role.
This comes out on top
The World's Fastest Indian works as art (directing, acting, photography, locatons, ...) but it's much more than that. The passion of the characters and the team that have made it are a close match for one another. Whether you know (or care) about motorcycles or not; if you're looking for another top-notch performance from Anthony Hopkins or never heard of him; whatever your motivation for watching this film, you will come away rejoicing at and revelling in it.
The best film we've watched all year (July '06). Our only regret is that we didn't get to see it at the cinema!
Nothing to do with Native Americans entering the Olympics, The World's Fastest Indian tells the unlikely story of Burt Munro and his Indian Twin Scout motorbike (or "motorsickle", as Munro calls it). In his sixties in the 1960s, Munro, a bluff, mildly gruff, slightly deaf Kiwi with an angina condition, resolved to test his customized bike at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA. His Indian, despite being fitted with homemade innovations like a kitchen door hinge or a brandy cork to plug its fuel tank, set a 1967 world record that remains unbroken to this day.
A labour of love for director Roger Donaldson, an adopted New Zealander whose Hollywood track record -...
World's Fastest Indian, The
Quite irresistible, largely thanks to the most cherishable performance that Anthony Hopkins has given in years
