Attempting to impress his ideologies on religion, relationships, and the randomness (and worthlessness) of existence, lifelong New York resident Boris Yellnikoff rants to anyone who will listen, including the audience. But when he begrudgingly allows naive Mississippi runaway Melodie St. Ann Celestine to live in his apartment, his reclusive rages give way to an unlikely friendship and Boris begins to mold the impressionable young girl's worldly views to match his own. The more you care about Woody Allen and his 40-year career as a writer-director, the more Whatever Works will affect you.
In and of itself, this film is no great shakes, but it does make intriguing connections to the Allen of the recent as well as the more distant past, and that is likely to be of interest to true believers.
For one thing, Allen is back in Manhattan for the first time in five films. His vehicle is a sour romantic comedy, only sporadically amusing, about the relationship between Larry David's misanthropic genius and Evan Rachel Wood's dimwitted Southern beauty queen turned young runaway.

The main character and Allen surrogate, played by Curb Your Enthusiasm's David, is Boris Yelnikoff, a doom-and gloom-mongering curmudgeon who flies into fruitless tirades with the greatest of ease. While Allen created Boris, the disgruntled intellectual David plays is a close cousin to his misanthropic TV character. But nothing about this doppelg??nger is likable, or even interesting. It's a Woody Allen film through and through. Pervert that he is. Larry David plays a character that is the exact same in all Woody Allen films. Self-Agrandizing, Godless and perverse. Nothing special.
