Wedding Date, TheThis film seems to exist solely to give a TV actor - 'Will & Grace's' Debra Messing - the chance to see if she can carry a feature film. To this end, it's reasonably successful, as Messing reveals herself to be a pleasant performer with both character and charm. But as for the rest film, who needs another lukewarm rom-com about a wedding?
Adapted from Elizabeth Young's novel 'Asking For Trouble' by first-timer Dana Fox, The Wedding Date sees Messing play singleton Kat Ellis. Off to England for the wedding of her sister (Adams), Kat decides to spare herself all the questions about when she'll meet the right chap by hiring Nick (Mulroney), a male escort, to pose as her boyfriend. Nick's presence has the bonus of annoying Kat's former fianc?© (Sheffield) who dumped her two years ago. But while he might be on the payroll, Nick proves himself to be more than just a model employee, quickly establishing himself as the most decent bloke in the world and the kind-hearted confidant Kat has always required.
Having played a neurotic thirtysomething on telly for the better part of seven years, it's perhaps not surprising that Messing is good as the likeable but lonely Ms Ellis. Likewise Mulroney's genre experience in films such as My Best Friend's Wedding means that he has his Mr Nice Guy act pretty much down pat. However, the pairing isn't entirely natural and their combined charisma isn't enough to elevate a largely mediocre film.
