Wag the DogSmart political satire from director Barry Levinson (Diner, Rain Man), with writers David Mamet and Hilary Henkin doing a fine job of adapting Larry Beinhart's novel 'American Hero' for the screen.
Headline news was made when this farcical tale of a US President's aids spinning the idea of a war in Eastern Europe to distract from his sexual misdeeds dove-tailed (coincidentally) with Bill Clinton's hostile escapades in the wake of the Monica Lewinski scandal.
Hoffman is suitably slimy as Stanley Motss, the movie producer called in to 'create' the campaign, while De Niro plays tweedy but devious spin doctor Conrad Brean. Willie Nelson gets top marks for his rendition of the supposedly 'classic' (but actually horrendous) ode to 'Old Shoe', a sentimental theme for a fictionalised war hero, that ludicrously unites the country.
