Inspired by the novel The Viking by Edison Marshall, The Vikings was lensed on location in Norway under extremely adverse weather conditions. Adding to the difficulty was the fact that star Kirk Douglas and director Richard Fleischer never quite found a common ground, and for years thereafter would hold each other responsible for the film's falling short of its potential. Still, the finished product is quite a feast for the eyes and ears. Douglas, the son of Viking leader Ernest Borgnine, carries on a film-length feud with slave Tony Curtis, who, though he does not realize it, is actually hi... s illegitimate son. This personal battle comes to a head when Douglas and Curtis both lay claim on captured English princess Janet Leigh. The scene everyone remembers in The Vikings finds Borgnine, at the mercy of wicked monarch Frank Thring, defiantly throwing himself into a pit of ravenous wolves. Launched into distribution with one of the splashiest ad campaigns in United Artists' history, The Vikings proved an enormous success; it inspired the 1959 TV series Tales of the Vikings, which utilized the film's props, costumes and scale-model ships. This has to be what I can only describe as the ultimate Sunday movie. If you can picture yourself on Sunday fully fed and in a warm room with nothing better to do but relax and watch an un-taxing extremely entertaining film then this is possible one of the best. The scenes and colouring of the film is typical classic late 50's with the Technicolor looking beautifully re-mastered. This is without doubt one film I truly love and a film that is also great for all round family entertainment. Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis give brilliant performances as two unknowing brothers one a high ranking Viking the other a Viking slave in respective order. A massive box-office hit on its release in 1958, The Vikings blazed a trail for the grand, historical epic. Even now, decades later, it's a remarkably impressive spectacle built around some vast action sequences and equally large performances by a couple of old Hollywood titans.
Narrated by Orson Welles, the story follows Viking king Ragnar (Borgine) and his son Einar (Douglas) as they attempt to kidnap Princess Morgana (Leigh). But Einar falls for her, and then so does slave Eric (Curtis), who also turns out to be the illegitimate son of Ragnar.

This tremendously exciting, if gory, adventure epic was a huge hit for independent producer/star Kirk Douglas, who generously changed the title of Edison Marshall's novel The Viking in order to include his friends Tony Curtis as Eric the Viking, Janet Leigh (Mrs Curtis) as the lovely Princess Morgana and Ernest Borgnine as King Ragnar. Jack Cardiff's Technirama location photography is superb (real fjords!) and Harper Goff's splendid art direction gives a remarkably authentic sense of period.
