Very Bad Things
Christian Slater, Jon Favreau and Cameron Diaz star in this smart black comedy about five guys whose stag night in Vegas results in the accidental death of a stripper
Violence and accusations of bad taste ensured the directorial debut of 'Chicago Hope' star Peter Berg opened to controversy. Carefully assembled for maximum schlock value, it's a slick, sick and gleefully gruesome farce that gives its quality cast plenty of opportunity to explore the comic potential of embarrassment and death. Flashy stockbroker Kyle (Jon Favreau) is about to get married to Laura (Cameron Diaz) but before tying the knot he and the boys hit Vegas, where one of them inadvertently impales a stripper on a bathroom hook. While chopping up the body into disposable chunks the boys are interrupted by a security guard. They kill him too. Race, disability, prejudice and greed power a series of cheerfully tasteless gags: in a fine example of Berg's preoccupations, a scrap at a funeral ends with one of the guys trying to extract the crotch of his trousers from the teeth of a mourning widow. Christian Slater glowers as the brutally efficient best man, and Cameron Diaz is the impressively objectionable bride-to-be who agrees to overlook her partner's indiscretions - provided he does nothing to make her look common. Verdict A savagely executed scatological comedy that relishes its own bad smell. |
