Varsity BluesOne of the less likeable of the 1990s teen movies, but one which at least shows willingness to take issue with the culture in which it's set. Voight is the snarling coach of a school football team in nowhere, Texas, where the results he garners are the key to the town's self-esteem. Van Der Beek is the cocky quarterback forced into taking on the captainship after an injury disables their star player - but who'd rather be studying for his exams. The film has a creditable interest in teen angst and the wrongness of valuing sporting prowess above academic achievement.
