Two Weeks Notice
Lawyer Sandra Bullock decides to quit after her job turns into babysitting boss Hugh Grant. But their professional relationship blossoms into something more during her notice period
A recipe for a romantic comedy. Very easy. No original thought required: 1) Hire Sandra Bullock to play a sweet, liberal lawyer. 2) Hire Hugh Grant as her bumbling, toffish but charming boss. Boss is co-owner of evil real estate mega-company. 3) Show several scenes of girl falling over things to demonstrate kookie, klutzy nature. 4) Show several scenes of boss finding life impossible to organise without sweet ditzy girl. 5) Girl hands in notice as boss becomes nightmare. 6) Boss and girl fall in love with crushing inevitability, despite girl falling over several more objects, a scheming bitch rival making a play for boss and ideological clashes (note from studio: love must conquer all, Supplementary note from studio: film must end with obligatory chase down street.). The only problem with this recipe? The leads have no on-screen chemistry and few decent lines, thus fulfilling neither 'romantic' nor 'comedy' genre requirements. Verdict Formulaic, tired and unlikeable, Two Weeks Notice is proof that not even the world's most bankable stars can produce a sparkle when the material is so turgid. |
