James Woods stars as a William Kuntsler-style lawyer in this tale of injustice and renewed dignity. In the 1960s, idealistic advocate Eddie Dodd courted controversy by defending outspoken youths and free spirits. Alas, in the 20 years since, he has succumbed to cynicism. This under-rated courtroom thriller gives James Woods a rare good-guy role as a one-time radical lawyer who now scrapes a living defending drug dealers under dubious constitutional arguments. However, he rediscovers his idealism when he takes up the case of a young Korean, who claims he has been framed for a gangland murder. Woods turns in a edgy, passionate performance and is ably supported by Robert Downey Jr as his young assistant. Although the script doesn't bear too much scrutiny, director Joseph Ruben screws every ounce of tension out of it.
After eight years in prison for a crime he did not commit, an Asian-American is given fresh hope by an idealistic law-school graduate (Downey Jr) and his boss, a washed-up, pot-smoking shyster lawyer (Woods), who needs to prove to himself that he still has what it takes to fight injustice. Just when you think you've heard this one before, it twists round and bites back with enough surprises to keep even the most jaded moviegoer watching the ball. Woods, as ever, is wired for a fight - in or outside the courtroom. It's all Downey Jr can do to hold him back.
