Tristan + Isolde

James Franco is a gorgeous, smoldering lover in Tristan & Isolde, but you can't help being reminded of Ben Stiller's Zoolander character.

Like Derek Zoolander, Franco's Tristan wears the same yearning expression in almost every scene.

Though it's being billed as the pre-cursor to Romeo and Juliet, it doesn't come close to the haunting romance of Franco Zeffirelli's seminal 1968 film.

As a young English lad, Tristan sees his parents killed by Irish invaders. Raised by the principled village ruler, Lord Marke (Rufus Sewell), Tristan matures into a brave and loyal man and, incidentally, a capable guerrilla warrior. He defeats the Irish ...

Beautifully told tragedy
This tale pre-dates romeo and juliet and may well have been Shakespeare's inspiration. The story is beautifully told - some violence but in context; subtle and sensitive sex scenes; and NO swearing! What a refreshing change.

Period film with excellent acting
Beautifully shot, excellent acting with all the right people in the leads.

Tristan (Marco) is a hero who has been taken under the wing of Rufus Sewell in the days when England was several kingdoms with everyone wanting unity under one King. Except that some are prepared to be underhand about it.

Fight scenes are missing the gore of Gladiator and Troy so are probably suitable for younger viewers.

Tristan inadvertently falls in love with the betrothed of the King, and nobly struggles to keep it under control.

The romance develops gently without explicit scenes, and leaves space between the characters that leaves you empathising.

Tristan + Isolde

Ridley Scott has been trying to get this film made for an awfully long time and given the flair he bought to his own historical epics, such as The Duellists and Gladiator, it's a shame he isn't in the director's chair this time round. Scott and brother, Tony, serve as executive producers but it's Kevin Reynolds of Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves fame who's calling the shots, which may explain why the whole thing feels so formulaic.
