A preoperative male-to-female transsexual travels to New York when she discovers she may have fathered a son who is currently in prison. A misunderstanding finds her son believing she is a Christian missionary, and the two travel to Los Angeles together where they begin to build a relationship.
Not just Flick's flick
A large amount of the praise this film has received centres, rightly, on Felicity Huffman's inspired portrayal of the rather ironically named, considering her later involvement in Desperate Housewives, Bree Osbourne. However there is certainly more to it than this - Kevin Zegers is also excellent, achingly naive as her son Toby, in a difficult role requiring a little more than the typical narcissistic abused teenager gig. There are some gorgeously hilarious lines, the best ones being in the exchanges between Bree and Toby ('Sh*t. I mean darn. No, I mean sh*t'), and the way in which the classic 'road trip' genre is subverted is great, allowing the audience a point of refer...
Needs a chop here and there...
Felicity Huffman delivers a pitch perfect performance here as a pre-op transexual she looks the part and her clearly studied mannerisms seem entirely appropriate. Generally, she lifts the film out of mediocre status. Transamerica seems genuinely motivated, but it has an obvious and saggy script. Its another all-about-the-lead-performance film (same vein as the recent Capote) as opposed to much else, but there are some amusing asides (Huffmans characters mum providing many of them) and a fairly thoughtful subtext. Certainly worth catching but should have been a bit sharper.

That the film succeeds without slipping too far into sentimentality or didacticism is in no small measure the result of Ms. Huffman's wit and grace.

Great movie, touching, with some really good acting. If you are straight, like in my case, regardless of how much you respect gay or trans-genre people, you will end up twitching and feeling a bit freaked out at least once during the movie.
this was a very original movie, with simply a very good plot, and is really worth the watch. touching of course. i think it takes a lot, to understand transexual people more than ''gays'' because there are involved a lot of more deep feelings.. and maybe it is not well accepted, but, we are in our ways to feel good. i guess. 5/5
