Leslie Zevo is the son of an eccentric toy maker. While Leslie was closest to his father and works as a toymaker himself, his Military General Uncle, Leland Zevo, inherits the toy making factory and begins making war toys. Leslie, however, does not see eye to eye with his Uncle, as his father had a policy against making War toys. When the General begins making live weaponry behind Leslie's back, and recruiting children to pilot his army, Leslie, his friends, and his family band together to put an end to the General's tyranny.
Toys
In this fragile fantasy, Donald O'Connor plays an ailing toymaker whose factory becomes an assembly line for destructive toys when his war-addicted brother, Michael Gambon, inherits the business. You'll gasp in sheer amazement at the magnificent sets and décor, which alone make this vainglorious slice of Pythonesque whimsy and allegory worth a look — just try to ignore the rather naive and self-indulgent plot. Robin Williams, playing the nephew who tries to stop Gambon manufacturing only war toys, is surprisingly low-key, though, ironically, director Barry Levinson's cult flop could have done with one of Williams's over-the-top performances.
Unfairly panned on its cinema release, Levinson's whimsical fantasy is far more fun than its disastrous performance at the box office would have you believe. Made in the days before Williams' more recent twee film person abegan to pall, this sees him very likeable as a toymaker who has to rescue his dead father's toy factory from the clutches of his uncle, a former army general who wants to make weapons instead of toys. The always under-rated Cusack gets a good role as Williams' even madder sibling, but the real stars are the toys themselves, a triumph of clever special effects and sheer inventiveness.
