This is England: Mods, New Romantics, and Skinheads are the major youth sub-cultures of this very English summer of 1983 and young 12-year-old Shaun is left wandering aimlessly alone and lost during the start of his school holidays, until his chance meeting with Woody and his fun and friendly Skinhead pack. Finding a new lease of life; girls, parties, Ben Sherman shirts, Doc Martin boots and shaven hairstyles young Shaun is welcomed, life during this summer holiday has got a whole lot better. That is until Combo arrives on the scene bitter, dangerous, racist, militant and psychotic life for yo... ung Shaun has just approached his first major crossroads. This is England is a look back at the early eighties of British working-class life through the eyes of young Shaun and his new gang, and dealing with the bitterness of outside influences such as racism and xenophobia, of mass unemployment and the fall out of the Falkland's War; Thatcher's Britain: Did we ever have it so good? An Hilarious, disturbing must see !!
Firstly, 15 year old Thomas Turgoose is immense in this, a truly magnificent, humerous performance full of truth. Secondly, the film itself is superb, it punches where it needs to and exhorts fits of laughter too, totally describing the 80s, certainly as I remember them, with a cringing accuracy that made me catch my breath. Based on a group of skinheads having fun who get unfortunately re-involved with a more radical race obsessed ex-member who has been in prison, who attempts to turn the good time gang into a bunch of race hate muppets. The whole thing is a well worked and worthy film that I would not hesitate in recommending wholeheartedly.
Now... I repect greatly others views...
This Is England Twelve-year-old Shaun hooks up with a bunch of fun-loving skinheads during the long hot summer of 1983, until the spectre of racism drives the group apart. Shane Meadows' most personal film to date
At 12-years-old, and young-looking even for his age, Shaun Fields (Turgoose) looks hardly capable of breaking and entering a boiled egg. As elder skinhead Combo (Graham) jokes, he looks like "he came out of a box, like an Action Man, or Barbie doll". Shaun's loss of innocence is at the heart of Shane Meadows' most autobiographical work to date (notice how 'Shaun Fields' deliberately echoes 'Shane Meadows'), along with ever-relevant subjects like absent and surrogate fathers,...

Good film full of realism that closes with a dramatic ending. Terrific acting from such a young little bugger. Soundtrack was very fitting as well. 8.5/10
This film has a great story that ya just gotta' watch, I found it to be a wonderful departure from Hollywood cinema, very pertinent to England at that time in history.,, I'll add this to my DVD library one day.
