They don't get any better than this...,
Rather than offering the usual trite 'Make Sure You Don't Miss This Film' I will simply say, 'Don't Bother Watching Anything Else In 2008'

Personal I never had any experiance of drugs and nobody I know have been using drugs - but I don't think this stunning film doesn't just get it right when it comes to the horrors of heroin addiction it provides powerful hints as to the best way for an addict to make good his escape!

But this flick is much, much more than a primer on drug addiction. It is simply one of the most moving and motivating flicks I've ever seen on the potential for creative change achievable through the decidedly Low Tech techniqu...

For the first half an hour or so I didn't think this was going to be for me then suddenly things started to click into place and I found that I was hooked. A recently widowed thirty something Audrey (Halle Berry) whose world revolved around her husband Brian (David Duchovny) invites his troubled best friend and heroin addict Jerry Sunborne (Benicio Del Toro ) who she's always hated to live with her and her two children following his death . As the story unfolds and Audrey clings on to Jerry as one of the last connections to her husband she begins to discover the redeeming qualities her husband had always seen in him and the children look to him for guidance as he tries to he...

Though loss is the cornerstone of the slow-moving and somber Things We Lost in the Fire, wisdom is gained by the final frame.

The movie makes some missteps, most of them in pacing and length, and the story veers occasionally into melodrama, but it is saved by the powerful performance of Benicio Del Toro. As a heroin addict who spirals down, recovers, relapses and finally seems on the road to more lasting recovery, he is hypnotically watchable.

This was a good movie, but not great. The first 40 minutes were absolutely wasted material, because the movie begins just then, i found that pointless, then again some lapses towards the end. It's a great story played by great actors, so realistically the movie is based solely on the actors credibility. I also didn't like the directing much. Not sure if anyone noticed, but the CU (zoom) got me annoyed. Far too much.

I love both actors and no matter what they do, I'd always watch them.

I give it 3,5 out of 5, but I wouldn't watch it twice

From reading so many reviews, claiming how amazing this film is, I thought it was amazing -- but I was wrong. Not to take anything away from the acting aspect becuase the acting was great, from Halle and the addict to the children.

However, the story/plot IS NOT believable. I find it hard to believe that these children would be so attached to a man -- drug addict -- so quickly after going through a major lost in their life. Moreover, I find it hard to believe that a widower (Halle) would be so interested in helping a man (her late husband's best friend) get through his drug abuse when she has two kids to worry about.

In all, this film is good and heartfelt but it is not an amazing film at all. In fact, it was quite boring in some segments. Nonetheless, it's worth watching at least once (especially when the beautiful Halle Berry is present). Again, the storyline is shaky and not really believable at least for me. However, the acting in general was incredible; thus, I give this picture a 3/5.
