The Year My Voice BrokeA coming-of-age drama that brought director Duigan many plaudits - and rightly, as this is one of the best examples of a genre all too often steeped in mawkish sentimentality. The young protagonist is teenager Danny (Taylor) whose passage to adulthood is made in a remote New South Wales backwater town where he lusts after the slightly strange Freya (Carmen). Duigan's gift for characterization and feel for period give the film its haunting and evocative mood, and hint at something altogether darker than the average teen flick. Taylor went on to star in the sequel Flirting, which also earned him rave reviews.
