The Sullivans
Unbearably moving (because you know the outcome) true story of the five brothers of a single family who enlisted, fought, and died together in the Second World War (the American Navy consequently banned all family members from serving on the same ship). It makes you wonder if Steven Spielberg was aware of it when he made Saving Private Ryan. Here a superb cast does full justice to the tragedy of the brothers from Iowa, whose ship was sunk at Guadalcanal. Although the Sullivans themselves are played by virtual unknowns, exceptionally fine acting is provided by top-billed Anne Baxter as the wife of Al Sullivan, the last to enlist, and in particular by Thomas Mitchell and Selena Royle as the boys' parents.
