When Grandduke Charles, the prince-regent of Carpatha, a fictitious Balkan country which could start a European war by switching alliances, visits London for the coronation of the new British king in 1911, and spends his one evening off at the Coconut Girl club, the reputed stickler for protocol is so charmed by a clumsy American understudy that he orders his British attach? to invite her to the embassy for a private supper. Being overlooked and understanding German, she learns of the repressive attitude of the regent and the plans of his reformist, pro-German minor son, king Nicholas, to tak... e over power by surprise, but doesn't dodge and tries to reconcile father and son. The queen-dowager decides to make her lady-in-waiting for the coronation day, so she stays in the picture to everyone else's surprise.

Olivier directs himself and Monroe in this fluffy romcom, about flighty and far from innocent American entertainer Elsie Marina (Monroe) who becomes mixed up with royalty during the 1911 coronation of George V - or, to be more precise, with the regent of a remote principality (Olivier). The plot is paper-thin, but the film showcases Monroe's talents as a comedienne. Nothing could better the scene in which she gets a little drunk during her first visit to the royal palace - and naturally she looks absolutely radiant. The pairing of Olivier and Monroe seems unlikely but works surprisingly well.

What should have been an explosive pairing of Hollywood's golden girl, Marilyn Monroe, and England's greatest theatre actor, Laurence Olivier, doesn't quite come off, largely owing to the vapidity of the vehicle chosen: a tired Terence Rattigan play, The Sleeping Prince, written for the Coronation and already dated before it hit the West End boards. Yet there's much to be thankful for, especially the presence of Monroe, lovingly lit in Technicolor by the great Jack Cardiff. The seduction scenes in this film best display Marilyns genius as a comic actress, visually delightful to see her portraying a real woman who is warm, convincing, and with depth, Monroe as the great star she was and always will be, I rate it a 4+/5.
