Isabel Archer, an American heiress and free thinker travels to Europe to find herself. She tactfully rebuffs the advances of Caspar Goodwood, another American who has followed her to England. Her cousin, Ralph Touchett, wise but sickly becomes a soulmate of sorts for her. She makes an unfortunate alliance with the creepy Madame Merle who leads her to make an even more unfortunate alliance with Gilbert Osmond, a smooth but cold collector of Objets' de art who seduces her with an intense but unattainable sexuality. Nicole Kidman plays Isabel Archer, the titular lady, an American orphan whose strike for independence in patriarchal Victorian society is boosted when she inherits a small fortune from English cousins. Having turned down marriage proposals she travels to Italy where she's persuaded, by a new and mysterious friend Madame Serena Merle (Hershey), to tie the knot with scoundrel Gilbert Osmond (Malkovich).
Campion adds adventurous fantasy sequences to the lush, charged, painterly style that she used in The Piano and, helped by a starry cast, brings a powerfully feminist slant to the drama.

This is one rare masterpiece. The script, directing and acting is extremely intense, but not in a Hollywood way. Good cast. Intelligent movie about human behaviour on a deeper level. About love, wanting to be free and independant, wanting to manipulate to get your ways and making (wrong) choices.
I loved it. Definitely worth a watch if you are not looking for action and cliche romance.
