The Odyssey
Whittled down from a mini-series, this lavish dramatisation of Homer's epic poem benefits from state-of-the-art special effects. It also has some breathtaking Mediterranean scenery, including the ruins of Troy that lend unrivalled authenticity to the famous Trojan Horse episode. Armand Assante is suitably heroic as the King of Ithaca, who encountered the Cyclops, the treacherous Eurymachus and the bewitching Circe and Calypso during his 20-year adventure. Andrei Konchalovsky directs with a judicious blend of mythical spectacle and philosophical insight, and expertly handles a stellar cast that includes Isabella Rossellini as Athena and Greta Scacchi as Penelope.
