The Long, Hot SummerWelded together by mood and a liberal dose of Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, this Deep South melodrama is heady stuff. The simmering tension on screen was a reflection of the off screen dramas, with a disgruntled Welles (as Varner), lording it over the the production. He plays the father of a weak son (Franciosa) and a spinsterish daughter (Woodward). Into their lives comes a drifter who awakens the daughter and nearly supplants the son.
Newman, perfectly cast as the intruder, dominates the movie. It was the first of his many collaborations with wife-to-be Woodward. Adapted from stories by William Faulkner.
