A teenage girl riding a horse is hit by a truck. To help heal her troubled/injured daughter, and horse, the mother takes them to Montana to recuperate at the ranch of a 'horse whisperer', a horse healer of mystical talents. The mother proceeds to fall in love with him, as well.

When great and formerly glamorous actresses resort to filters, gauze and clever lighting, the worst they can expect is an indulgent snigger. When an actor, like Redford, arguably more beautiful than many of his co-stars (except Paul Newman), does the same, he invites ridicule. Redford as producer, director and star of this emotional film got away with it by sheer chutzpah. Never has the scenery looked so inspiring (well, not since A River Runs Through It). The story of the guy who knows horses and people, and saves an injured girl, her mother and, of course, her wonderful traumatized horse, wends its way through three hours, and, as the boss was Redford, refuses to be hurried.
