The Heart Is A Lonely HunterCarson McCullers's first novel of the Deep South, about all the lonely people, has been generally well adapted, though the focus has been shifted from Mick, the young girl (Locke in her screen debut), suffering adolescent traumas, to Mr Singer (Arkin), the simple-minded deaf-mute she befriends. Other misfits are a drunk (Keach, another debut), a giant Greek mute (McCann), a black, anti-white doctor (Rodriguez) and his insecure daughter (Tyson). What matters, though, are the touching performances, especially Arkin and 20-year-old Tennessee-born Locke, both Oscar-nominated, who interact impressively.
