The Great Waldo PepperBarnstorming Waldo Pepper (Redford) is only 'great' in his imagination. He lies about his involvement in the First World War and desperately seeks the thrills and glories that flying provides. Where else is there for a phoney hero to go but Hollywood? This was a box-office flop after Hill and writer Goldman had been hailed as conquering heroes after their first collaboration, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. A shame, because this is a passionate and insightful film, containing one of Redford's finest performanes. As the great Goldman once said, 'Sometimes you get it right, and it still doesn't work.'
