The FixerFrankenheimer's powerful film (taken from Bernard Malamud's equally hard-hitting novel) further illustrates the prejudices and anti-semitism of Czarist Russia. Bates stars as the poverty-stricken Jew who, having been deserted by his wife, travels to Kiev and lands himself a decent job as a handyman by posing as a Gentile - until, that is, his cover is blown after a neighbourhood murder and he becomes suspect number one purely because of his true identity. Bates is superb, and so is Bogarde as the lawyer who believes in his innocence but knows that to prove it could be dangerous for the local Jewish population.
