The Captain's Paradise
Alec Coppel received an Oscar nomination for the original story of this self-satisfied British comedy, in which bigamy is laughed off as the ideal solution to the sociosexual vacillation of an outwardly charming sea captain. Called upon to do little more than vegetate in Gibraltar and tango around Tangier, Alec Guinness cruises through this lightweight picture, which charts an even more predictable course than the ferry he commands. Yvonne De Carlo confuses noise with exoticism, but Celia Johnson is splendid as the mouse wife who discovers, in the bazaars of North Africa, that there is more to life than warming slippers.
