The Boys in Company CAlong with Coming Home and The Deerhunter, the film belongs to the first wave of worthy Vietnam dramas trying to come to terms with America's defeat, and is often cited as prefiguring Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket.
Following five Marines through boot camp, to the nightmare futility of combat, to attempts to escape their living hell, The Boys trots out too many war-movie clichés to mark it out from the quality films mentioned (the inept commander, the rock 'n' roll music, the corrupt foreigners), without offering any insight or invention.
Good performance from Ermey as the drill instructor, but then, that was his day job before this film.
