The Bedford IncidentWidmark stars as the captain of a US destroyer, playing cat and mouse with Russian nuclear submarines during the cold war. Stern, patriotic and brilliant, he's a hero to his crew. But his icy control is tested with the arrival on board of reporter Poitier whose probing questions uncover the skipper's alarming motivations. Somewhere between A Few Good Men, The Hunt for Red October and Dr Strangelove, Harris's film is a superior psycho-drama. The nerve-jangling claustrophobia of the military situation is impressively constructed while the tension of the central relationship is stoked by superb performances from Widmark and Poitier.
