James Parker and Harry Holt are on an expedition in Africa in search of the elephant burial grounds that will provide enough ivory to make them rich. Parker's beautiful young daughter Jane arrives unexpectedly to join them. Harry is obviously attracted to Jane and he does his best to help protect her from all the dangers that they experience in the jungle. Jane is terrified when Tarzan and his ape friends first abduct her, but when she returns to her father's expedition she has second thoughts about leaving Tarzan. This is the first, and classiest, movie in the series starring Olympic swimming champion Johnny Weissmuller as the jungle swinger created by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Directed by WS Van Dyke, with a skill to confirm his nickname of "One-Take Woody", the tale introduces the ape-reared boy to future partner Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan), daughter of huffing-and-puffing C Aubrey Smith, who's searching for an elephant graveyard. For the lead in the first Tarzan 'talkie', Van Dyke wanted 'a man who is young, strong, well-built, reasonably attractive, but not necessarily handsome, and a competent actor.' He chose Weissmuller, the 27-year-old Olympic gold medal swimming champion, and the best of all the many Tarzans, though the character bore no resemblance to Edgar Rice Burroughs' articulate English lord. O'Sullivan, too, was unequalled as Jane, the scantily-clad woman who lives in sin in the jungle with the near-naked hunk of a man. Incidentally, there is no 'Me Tarzan, you Jane' line - the couple say 'Jane-Tarzan', 'Tarzan-Jane.'
