Based on Patricia Highsmith's novel of the same name, Minghella's moody follow-up to his Oscar-winning THE ENGLISH PATIENT concerns Tom Ripley, a poor New Yorker, who is sent to Italy by the wealthy Mr. Greenleaf in order to bring back his spoiled son, Dickie. Once in Italy, Tom charms his way into the home of Dickie and his girlfriend Marge, where he begins to get a taste of wealthy living. When Tom begins to wear out his welcome, he takes drastic actions to ensure that he will never have to return to the life that he left behind.
Talented Mr. Ripley, The An amoral young man lies and kills his way to achieve the lifestyle he wants. Matt Damon and Jude Law star in Anthony Minghella's adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's classic thriller
Forget Good Will Hunting. This was the movie where we first got to see Matt Damon turning on the style. His Tom Ripley is a blank canvas on which he neatly sketches half a dozen different personas with a skill as compelling to watch as it is chilling. It's a performance that makes a good movie into an almost great one.
From the moment we first meet Ripley - playing piano at a party - he's pretending to be someone else. Playing along with a couple who mistake him for a Princeton fri...
You'll either love it or hate it.
I'm a fan of Matt Damon and Jude Law so this looked like an great combination for a movie. It tells the story of a young man (Damon) who pretends to be an old friend of the son of a wealthy American living in europe (Law). He fools all into buying his scam and starts enjoying a life with all the benefits of a wealthy, carefree friend.
But things start to go a little too far, and how far will he go to preserve this fake existence?
So, the plot sounds interesting enough. But somehow, to me, the plot just seems a little too slow, and the characters just not quite believable. This may leave you not really caring what happens to who, or trying to figure out the plot instead of e...

From the moment we first meet Ripley - playing piano at a party - he's pretending to be someone else. Playing along with a couple who mistake him for a Princeton friend of their errant son Dickie, Ripley uses this chance encounter to blag a trip to Europe in less time than it would take most of us to order a drink.
His mission is to brin...

"...Visually impressive....It's difficult to think of a better cast..." -- 4 out of 5 stars
Talented Mr. Ripley, The
Director Anthony Minghella followed his award-winning The English Patient with this absorbing thriller, based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith. Matt Damon plays Ripley, a young opportunist who seeks out Dickie Greenleaf (Oscar-nominated Jude Law), an American playboy living it up in Europe. Ripley becomes friends with Dickie, but gradually comes to covet the carefree lifestyle he shares with his glamorous girlfriend (Gwyneth Paltrow). Minghella's classy direction and the superior cast make this never less than compelling.
