Taking of Pelham One Two Three, TheQuentin Tarantino long claimed that this film provided much of the inspiration for Reservoir Dogs and, with its colour-coded criminal characters and use of the now well-worn heist plot (two decades before it became fashionable), it isn't hard to see why.
However, in its own way The Taking of Pelham One Two Three is a more accomplished movie than Dogs; it's certainly less violent and rough around the edges, but no less exciting than Tarantino's sensational debut. Blue (Robert Shaw) and Green (Martin Balsam) lead the gang of armed robbers who hijack a New York subway train and demand one million dollars in one hour in return for the train and the lives of everybody on board. Director Jospeh Sargent piles on the tension expertly, proving that sometimes the simplest plots are the most effective. Those who think that the action thriller is an invention of the last two decades would do well to check this one out.
