College freshman John (Gib) Gibson decides to go cross country to visit his friend in California during winter break. Awaiting there is a bikini-clad babe whom his friend assures him is a "sure thing". Meanwhile, Allison, a cute (but somewhat anal retentive) girl at Gib's college has also decided to head out to Cal. to see her boyfriend during break. Gib and Allison are thrust together on a road trip from hell, and somewhere along the way, they find each other's company to be tolerable. Now, what will become of Gib's "sure thing?"
One of my top ten films ever
One of my top 10 films without a doubt. John Cusack at his funniest with some classic comedy moments. Some of the lines will stay with you for years to come. I first watched this film neary 20 years ago & still remember word perfect the scene where Cusack is pretending to be a crazy hitch hiker - 'why arent we moving'? will make you laugh long after the film has finished. Please rent this film - you will not be disappointed I promise. Its great for a Friday night after a long week at work - with a take away & a bottle of wine.
a great 80's hit!
i have seen this film lots of times already and this quote stuck in my mind... 'i've never met anyone like you before... usuallly when i meet someone new i feel awkward and shy... but with you it's different. i feel i could talk to you. we speak each others unspoken language... fluently... ' i must say this film is a classic. highly recommended.
Sure Thing, The
A delightful comedy from director Rob Reiner that should have made John Cusack a star. He's superb as a beer-guzzling, sex-obsessed freshman who travels from his eastern college to California during the holidays to meet up with a beautiful girl who's a "sure thing". However, during a series of misadventures he ends up on the road with clean-living Daphne Zuniga, and that's where the fun really begins. Both the leads are enjoyable to watch, and this seems like a virtual blueprint for Reiner's later When Harry Met Sally... , but with even more charm. Watch out for a young Tim Robbins as the driver with whom no one should ever hitch a ride.
