Louie is a New York slum landlord who is given 120 days to repair one of his apartment blocks. The problem for Louie is that he must live in the rundown block until the repairs are complete. Louie's father is the real boss, and he has no intention of paying for the repairs. This leaves Louie to live in the squaller his tenants endure all year round.
Pesci is the son of a slum landlord wanting to learn the trade and hoping to inherit all his father's buildings. Collecting the rent on a tenement block while dodging requests for even the most basic repairs, he finds himself in his element. However, when he is prosecuted and ordered to spend three months in his own building under appalling conditions, he changes his tune. Unfortunately, the director doesn't take advantage of the opportunity for social observation, and any issues raised are quickly dismissed in favour of cheap emotional manipulation as, with painful inevitability, Pesci turns human.
Super, The
Joe Pesci's Oscar for GoodFellas, as well as his appearances in blockbusters such as Home Alone, earned him the opportunity to become an unlikely leading man, but he enjoys mixed success here in his first such role. On paper it sounds great: Pesci plays a sleazy New York landlord who is taken to court and sentenced to a living hell — taking up residence in one of his own rat-filled apartments. The star is fine, and there's good support from Rubén Blades and Vincent Gardenia, but unfortunately director Rod Daniel indulges in too much soppy moralising, and the film veers uncomfortably between comedy and drama.
