A novelist (Emma Thompson) struggles to complete her latest, and potentially finest, book ??? she only has to find a way to kill off her main character, Harold Crick, and she'll be done. Little does she know that Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) is inexplicably alive and well in the real world and suddenly aware of her words. Fiction and reality collide when the bewildered and hilariously resistant Harold hears what she has in mind and realizes he must find a way to change her (and his) ending.

Whoah where did this come from? I added this film to my rental queue in the expectation that it would fill a slot. when it arrvied I'll be honest I thought do I really fancy this?
I wasn't a huge fan of being John Malchovich and felt that this film would be the same however I was very very wrong.
Ferrell provides I think delivers his best role to date, real character with jsut a touch of madness. he is also very supported by chain smoking thompson, very mellow hoffman and as ever a very sexy Maggie.

Masterpiece of its type
This is, for me, the Groundhog Day of the 00s. It's a hugely engaging, quirky high-concept film which could have gone so horribly wrong in dozens of ways, and yet - it steers a path through all the potential traps to deliver something that is very funny, very moving and very memorable. Will Ferrell is perfectly cast as Harold Crick and rarely will you feel such empathy with a character in a film as he struggles to come to terms with the strange way in which his life is unfolding. Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson bring a richness to their respective supporting roles, and Maggie Gyllenhaal is as winning as usual as the love interest.

I had started watching this awhile back but, hadnt got past ten minutes of it, so I figured i'd give it another go and I was pleasantly surprised.. Will Ferrell shows he can take on a serious role and does awesome at it, the movie has a great cast with Dustin Hoffman, Maggie Gyllenhall, Queen Latifah, Emma Thompson, and the "Sonic Guys".. Check it out, its not really a comedy and might start off slow but, its got a tremendous story.. 8/10..
I bought this at GrayWhale CD's and DVD's, before I had even seen it over 2 years ago. I have never been disappointed in each of the 4 times I have seen it. I have watched it alone 50% of the time. Some women just don't understand how remarkable this production is.. Will Ferrell is a serious talent. Im a dude, that happens to be romantic, and yes I cry, but this is the 2nd movie I have cried watching, 1st was my all time favorite, Braveheart in '96 when I was senior in high school.
Romantic, Beautiful, Funny ..This movie is in my top 5 all time.
.. the script. Just beautiful at times. I love narrated films - or whatever to call films with a voice over of this kind. And what happens at the end (or almost happens) - what many in here are complaining about - its because of this theme: destiny in the film, not cause of someones career or him being suicidal..
Bravo Will Ferrell. I seen some acting in this one where he doesn't go completely over the TOP! This man has skills and with the right training he could become something much more than a stand up/movie. I loved this movie except for the very irritating Narrator at the start, but once it got going I understood completely. Great film for everyone. 4/5
This could have been the movie of the year if done slightly better. The Narrator should have been snuffed at first glance lol. We've got to live our own lives and that doesn't mean the patterns that come up but the variance in those patterns. I:C
