Powerful and Moving
You almost seem to know where this film is going - there is just the inexorable pull towards an end you sincerely hope doesn't take place. Billy Bob Thornton's character is just so sympathetic and tragic (an utterly brilliant performance), you just want to shout out - 'give the guy a chance - take the evil out of this world and maybe this man can prosper'. Beautifully and darkly compelling.
Sling Blade
Developed from the short Some Call It a Sling Blade, this stately and shockingly moving drama brought debutant director Billy Bob Thornton to international attention. In addition to winning an Oscar for his screenplay, he also drew a best actor nomination for his mesmerising performance as hesitant, seemingly harmless handyman Karl Childers. Opening with a simple monologue delivered straight to camera, the film tells the story of Karl Childers. Committed as a child to a psychiatric institution for murdering his mother and her lover, now he's deemed r...
