Sleeping BeautyIs this the point when Disney animation lost its charm? Gone is the painstaking density of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfes, and the busy grace of Bambi, and in its place is something more brash, complacent and stylized. It's to do with the American 50s, I think - the Great Depression and the war gave urgency to the studio's earlier work, whereas this is a self-satisfied fairy tale for people who never had it so good. Deluxe and cheap at the same time, it shows Walt's empire becoming decadent and greedy - and on its way to being one of the most sinister organizations of recent history. |
