What a mess
Ok, this is a personal opinion but this movie is a shambles. Yes it won Oscars but that is no recommendation these days (A Beautiful Mind?!). By the numbers acting, no plotting, devoid of thrills and mediocre direction. Hopkins' Lecter is a true pantomime villain in the most terrible ways. Hammy and laughable, this could almost be Benny Hill up there.
Jodie Foster is no better. The "I'm scared but I'm FBI so I must be brave" delivery frankly disappointed me. This is an actor capable of so much more (The Accused for example) yet this doesn't stretch her abilities at all. Wanna see Lecter? Watch "Manhunter" for a truly terrifying everyman performance by a true underrated star, Brian Cox. |
