In the future, mankind consumed planet Earth, called "Earth-that-was", and moved to other planets and satellites. A new order is established with the totalitarian government of the Alliance, which fights and wins a war against their opponents, the independents. When Dr. Simon rescues his teenager telepathic sister River Tam from the claws of the Alliance, they are sheltered by a group of mercenaries and smugglers in the spacecraft Serenity, leaded by the former war hero Captain Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds. The Alliance send an assassin to bring River Tam back, while Mal and his crew find out how p... owerful she is and the truth about the hidden planet Miranda and the origin of the cannibals Reavers.

Though diehard fans probably will take issue, Serenity is mostly sci-fi silliness attempting to be something more substantive.
It is based on the short-lived Fox TV show Firefly, which attracted a cult following, and writer/director Joss Whedon squeezes out a few clever moments. But the characters are generally uninteresting and one-dimensional, and the futuristic Western-style plot grows tedious.
The story takes place 500 years in the future, when Earth has been destroyed by a war and the solar system taken over by a fascist alliance. A group of scruffy-but-hot rebels aboard the spaceship Serenity takes on the legions of evil fascists.

Phew - he didn't mess it up!
I saw the film at the final showing in Edinburgh with a non Firefly watcher. Not only did he not need to have seen it he nicked my DVD set afterwards.
There are some things newbies wouldn't know eg what Inara does. I don't think the film makes it clear - but it isn't needed so the fact newcomers won't know has absolutely no bearing on how they view the film.
I went basically hoping he hadn't screwed it up as I did enjoy the TV show - but I too loved the film. The following tries very hard to avoid any semblance of spoilers.
First - it looked like a big SF film which I wasn't expecting. Whedon does personal, he does character and he does humour. No...
Serenity After a future war, a group from the losing side ply a trade of smuggling and theft - until they get involved with a girl whose secret could change the balance of power in the galaxy. Big screen adaptation of Joss Whedon's short-lived television series 'Firefly'
In a time when science fiction cinema is dominated by the fussy CGI and abominable scripting of the Star Wars prequels, or the misfiring bombast of The Island, a smaller, more intimate and more heartfelt film is a breath of fresh air. Not that Serenity lacks excitement and spectacular set-pieces, but they are balanced by strong characterisation, distinctive dialogue and largely effective pe...
Serenity
TV season's worth of roller-coastering drama, most of it balanced on the capable shoulders of Fillion, a natural leading man.

I loved this movie because I loved the TV Series Firefly which was canceled after one season by idiots at Fox! Damn dude..I'm so sad now that I've watched everything in this series..I wish there were a few more seasons of the show or a Serenity 2 or something! Altho it is good that they killed off a few characters..at least makes it feel like there is a little bit of closure..damn, such a sad time for me now..
I loved the series Firefly, i was so angry when i found out they canceled it when i as finished watching the episodes, at least they came out with a nice movie to finish it off.. But all in all, DAMN YOU FOX, you canceled one of the best shows ever! DAMN YOU!
Good film with a decent story a nice action. The characters were fun with a little humour to match. Directing could have been better, but I liked the editing and camerawork. Not a classic by any means. Worth watching once for the entertainment alone. 7/10.
I could have done without all the overdrawn "tender" moments peppered throughout this movie, that always came at the wrong times; from a screenwriting point of view. The movie itself was a little drawn out longer than it needed to be. Other than that, the science fiction aspects/the idea was great. A good movie for sci-fi geeks. 3.5 ouf of 5 film cans from me. [SPOILER]
Summer Glau (Cameron of Terminator: Sarah Conner Chronicles), and Morena Baccarin (Anna of V), and Gina Torres (Helen of Cleopatra 2525) are all in this movie. Triple decker hot momma sandwich. Well no surprise Gina is in this since she is in the TV show, Firefly, duh.
I watched the series & enjoyed the movie. I just wish they would've given the show another chance. Now I see the actors in other projects, and wonder will they ever come back again. I saw this again with my GL, and she loved just as much as I did.
This movie is great, but a friend of mine watched the movie before the show and the experience was totally spoiled for him. And trust me, the movie will make you want to watch the show. The movie is basically the 2nd season of the show, and there are a lot of spoilers in it if you didn't fall in love with the 1st season first.
