Isabel and Clara are growing up in a time of terror. It is 1492, and Spain has decreed that all Jews must either convert to Catholicism, go into exile or face trial and execution. Although forcibly baptized, the sisters are chased through Christendom until they arrive in Venice. It is in this great maritime empire, where opulence rhymes with tolerance, that Isabel organizes secret passages for refugees fleeing the Inquisition while Clara falls in love with a Venetian noble, Paolo Zane. Isabel intends for her family to go to Istanbul, the only place where Jews can live freely, but Clara is rel... uctant to leave. She challenges Isabel's authority and is prepared to break her family ties and sacrifice her faith for love. Caught in this battle of wills is Clara's daughter, Victoria, who finds she is about to be married into the same faith that murdered her father.

It was okay
I'm a big Depp fan, so was anticipating this film, and maybe that was the problem. The material is sparse, more suitable for a made for TV movie, but I've watched worse; its just that expectations are higher than usual. If this is a psychological thriller the film falls short on both counts - the psychology being laid on with a brick and the 'thrills' being a bit mechanical. If you watch the features, the director helpfully explains (ah, THATs what he was trying to do)some of the stranger effects. JD's an excellent actor, but he was let down by the material and director this time round - Having said that, there are worse ways to spend a couple of hours.
A see-through film
A film about a writer who suddenly finds himself up against another writer who claims that he stole one of his ideas for a book he wrote. Written by Stephen King, the book was a fantasic read, but as with most Stephen King novels that get turned into films, this one is average all the way to the bank. Johnny Depp played his character well, hence 2 stars, but its not enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. Only watch if you have nothing better to do.
