Searching for Bobby FischerThis factually based drama about the problems facing a seven-year-old chess prodigy smacks more of TV movie-of-the-week territory than cinema material, and Zaillian (who subsequently wrote Schindler's List) directs with suitable restraint. The boy Josh (Pomeranc) becomes intrigued by the game while watching it played in a New York park. Dad (Mantegna), a journalist, discovers his son's prodigious talent and is torn between opposing teachers, the freewheeling Vinnie (Fishburne) from the park and the intellectual Pandolfini (Kingsley). The drama involves not just the games but the problems facing the family.
