Richard Linklater's adaptation of Philip K. Dick's classic novel is a challenging, mind-bending experience that cautions about the dangers of excessive drug use as well as the government's capacity to abuse and manipulate power. Using the same interpolated rotoscoping technique that Linklater employed in 2001's WAKING LIFE, the film is an animated, trippy descent into one man's unraveling mind. Set in the not-too-distant future where a new drug, substance D, has created an epidemic, A SCANNER DARKLY charts the mental unraveling of Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves). Arctor is an undercover cop who ha... s been assigned to track a group of individuals who include the hyper-intense Luckman (Woody Harrelson), the ultra-paranoid Freck (Rory Cochrane), and the beautiful Donna (Winona Ryder). As the film unfolds and Arctor finds himself abusing substance D in order to maintain his fa?ade, his mind begins to spin out of control, to the point where he doesn't know what's real and what isn't. Eventually, the truth comes out, leaving Arctor even more numbed. Linklater's surprisingly faithful adaptation of Dick's novel blends humor, drama, and Bob Sabiston's striking animation to deliver a thought-provoking film that will leave viewers as dazed as the film's protagonist.

...and I don't just mean that I didn't like it. The digital effect that has been applied to the whole film is very hard on the eye - it's like watching a badly made cartoon. I might have persisted if the plot had grabbed my attention, but it didn't.
A scanner tediously
Enough things in life are designed whether by accident or deliberately to induce a migraine so I cant say watching A Scanner Darkly was a very pleasant experience. It ,s rotoscoping animation effect reminded me of nothing more than the flashing light warning of the onset of a headache so powerful it could cause your house to subside.
If this doesnt render the viewing experience a bit of a trial the moribund screenplay will. This is a movie so dull its drug induced plot wouldnt even get Anne Widdicombe excited .While it is undoubtedly true to Philip K Dicks vision and the rotoscoping does induce a dreamlike quality entirely in correlation with its tale of d...
It is seven years from now, in Anaheim, California, and Charles Freck (Cochrane) has a bug problem. They are everywhere - in his apartment, on his dog, and crawling all over his flesh. He heads off to see his friend James Barris (Downey Jr), and shows him a particularly large specimen that he has trapped in a jar. But on the way, after experiencing a series of vivid hallucinations, Freck glances at the jar and realises that there is nothing in it.
So begins A Scanner Darkly, Richard Linklater's lysergic adaptation of the 1977 novel by cult sci-fi author (and notorious drug-user) Philip K Dick. As with Linklater's theosophical headtrip Waking Life (2001), once ag...
