Providing your standards aren't too high, Saw II is a worthy follow-up to its grisly predecessor. While most horror sequels are more like remakes, this one takes a different tack in continuing the first film's sadistic life-or-death gamesmanship in which a psycho named Jigsaw tortures those he sees as morally weak and unworthy of the gift of life. Placing them in elaborately engineered situations, Jigsaw tests how far his victims are willing to go to save their own lives.

First-time feature director Darren Lynn Bousman (taking over for James Wan, now an executive producer) grabs the audience immediately by the lapels, opening with a twisted Bu??uelian variat...

It's straight back to business with this sequel to 2004's effective little horror Saw. If you recall, that film involved a psychopath dubbed Jigsaw whose MO concerned kidnapping people, who woke to find themselves in a fiendish trap of some variety that could be survived, but only by doing something pretty unpleasant.

The film's strengths were its shocks and claustrophobia, realised with stylishly murky visuals. The same cinematographer, David A Armstrong, is back on board here, so there's a visual continuity. And the prologue reiterates Jigsaw's nasty me...

Saw II is a sequel to last October's Saw, which was the old saw about a chained-up victim being forced to saw off his limb as a trade-off against suffering even more.

Filmed for what appeared to be a handful of coins or maybe Necco Wafers, the original grossed $55 million domestically and just over $100 worldwide. Given its blood-dripping status as an uncommonly sadistic "hard-R," this means that most of the people who paid to see it were older than the 15-year-old boys who keep a lot of screen junk in business.
