For over a decade Joey Gazelle (Paul Walker) has successfully juggled his conflicting roles as loving family man and low-ranking mobster. However, when Joey ignores the mob's explicit instructions to dispose of the gun used in the fatal shooting of a corrupt cop during a bungled drugs operation, he unwittingly puts his loved ones in danger. Joey decides to stash the weapon in his own basement, just in case he should need some future collateral against his employers. Unfortunately, Joeys 10 year old son, Nicky (Alex Neuberger) and his best friend, Oleg (Cameron Bright), stumble across the hidde... n gun. Worse still, Oleg decides to use it to shoot his physically abusive stepfather who also happens to be connected to the Russian mafia. Thus Joey is forced to embark on a nightmarish 18-hour journey to find Oleg and the gun before his own gang, the Russians or the bent cop (Chazz Palminteri) hell-bent in profiting from the missing weapon, get there first.

A desperate young man carrying a bloodied child jumps from a house and into his car. Tearing away in search of the nearest hospital, his desperation takes him into the path of an oncoming vehicle. It sounds like an outtake from The Fast And The Furious, but that's as close as actor Paul Walker's latest film gets to his greatest success. If the bronzed, blue-eyed pin-up hoped Wayne Kramer's lurid crime thriller would be a stepping stone to more grown-up, serious fare, he will be disappointed.
Written and directed by Wayne Kramer, who co-wrote and directed The Cooler, Running Scared stars Paul Walker as a low-level mafia guy who finds himself in for a long, ultraviolent night after his son's best friend steals a gun used in a mob police massacre and uses it to shoot his abusive stepfather. If this sounds like a respectably run-of-the-mill plot for a respectable run-of-the-mill "popcorn" thriller (and it's compulsory to defend those, right? On the grounds that people love their junk and shouldn't be made to feel bad about it?), it's because synopsis cannot do justice to this kitsch atrocity.
