Royal Wedding
Here's a totally delightful oddity: a topical MGM musical, timed to chime in with the wedding of Princess Elizabeth (now the Queen) and Prince Philip, and actually incorporating library footage. Choreographer-turned-director Stanley Donen makes the most of his solo directing debut, despite an over-dependence on English stereotypes and fake fog. Donen has the inestimable benefit of the great Fred Astaire in the leading role, who furnishes his director with the movie's highlight, an incredible dance routine in which he dances effortlessly up the walls and on the ceiling of his room. Other plus points from Astaire are a duet with Jane Powell (replacing Judy Garland, who replaced June Allyson) and a further duet with a hat rack. It's a charming musical from a Hollywood studio at its height.
