In Welville, at Battle Creek, eccentric rich Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (a historical figure) runs a stylish health farm for the wealthy, an idea ahead of his time, based on extreme vegetarianism, neither sex, masturbation or even sensual stimulation, but laughing therapy and purging the 'polluted' body, mainly by exercises, often in open air, vicious diet, his invention corn flakes, laxatives, anal yogurt cure, enemas and brutal mechanical cleansing. Kellogs stubbornly willful adopted son (among over 30 kids) George is a filthy embarrassment, paid off just to stay away. Charles Ossining panics when arriving in Battle Creek he finds his aunt's fortune made him partner in the empty shell- health food company Per-fo, not the planned corn-flakes factory; however with a former Welville-employee and George's name they hope to get rich from their own cornflakes brand. Pu(e)rile!
Took a while to get into this but thought the cast was worth it. However, after a while the puerile jokes and obsession with bowel movements etc. got very wearisome. Afraid we couldn't be bothered to finish it but watched a nonfiction DVD of life on farms in Scotland in the 1930's and 50's (for which I've given a 5 star rating) instead.
Maybe this is a film for the younger person rather than single female senior citizens!
Turn of the century Michigan, home of corn flake creator Dr John Harvey Kellogg's sanatorium, a place where unconventional methods are used to clear customers' bodies of impurities. Parker frequently surprises us with his choice of projects, but those choices are not always rewarding. This is an uneven, silly film, with too many distracting sub-plots to have any real focus, and too many puerile jokes about enemas and stool samples to be particularly funny. A weird performance from Hopkins, almost unrecognizable as the good doctor, elevates proceedings a little, but ultimately as tasteless and witless as a dirty seaside postcard.
