Is there room for principle in Los Angeles? Mike Terry teaches jujitsu and barely makes ends meet. His Brazilian wife, whose family promotes fights, wants to see Mike in the ring making money, but to him competition is degrading. A woman sideswipes Mike's car and then, after an odd sequence of events, shoots out the studio's window. Later that evening, Mike rescues an action movie star in a fistfight at a bar. In return, the actor befriends Mike, gives him a gift, offers him work on his newest film, and introduces Mike's wife to his own - the women initiate business dealings. Then, things go ... sour all at once, Mike's debts mount, and going into the ring may be his only option.

Red Belter
The story is about a martial arts instructor who runs his own dojo and lives a calm peaceful life until one night he saves the life of an action movie star (played by Tim Allen). From this point he gets showered with gifts and favours that later transpire to be a set up to get him to compete for the much coveted red belt under extreme rules. This was a sensible action film that is far from action packed but easy viewing. Its a mix of best of the best and karate kid.
Worth a watch.
Redbelt Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a jiu-jitsu instructor who refuses to fight competitively. But after saving an actor in a bar fight, he gets drawn into a world of double-crosses and dirty deals. From writer-director David Mamet
"There is no situation you cannot escape from," says mixed martial arts instructor Mike Terry (Ejiofor) at the outset of David Mamet's latest dip into a world dripping with machismo. While this may be true when it comes to self-defence, it swiftly becomes clear that Terry's own life is crumbling around him. Barely able to pay the bills at his downtown LA training studio, he's kept afloat by his Brazilian wife Sondra (Braga), who has a small garment busin...
Peer pressure is tough, especially when it's pervasive, grown-up and institutionalized. In samurai movies, as in westerns, the warrior is often faced with a choice between individual morality and fealty to the tribe. Individual morality tends to prevail until society can be established and impose order, though in contemporary samurai movies, like Jim Jarmusch's excellent Ghost Dog, both choices can be rendered absurd by the circumstances.
This is not entirely so in David Mamet's tricky and engrossing Redbelt, a contemporary noir with a samurai movie interior, as sincere, plaintive and strangely optimistic a movie as he's made.
In Redbelt, ...

this was 95.05 min of .. WHAT?? story line stunk to high heaven. actor is good with some ufc stars but you will find yourself saying ' whats the plot?'. [SPOILER]
im a big fan of mma..the last fight is so fake i almost turned it off. plus if youve watched the sport, it only takes a few clean shots to finish a fight. BOO to hollywood for this flick!!
very good film, don?t believe those that gave this film a bad rating.. nice storyline, very good acting.. and nice camera plans and general quality too..
Ok, Segal or van damme are not martial artists their action stars. In their movies they have their girlfriend killed and they go out for revenge.. Heck a monkey could write one of their movies!! But this movie actually had a plot that you had to think about, not the typical American high budget rubbish where it is all CG and wires.. This is not a movie, this is a masterpiece. So don't even go as far as comparing it with those two bozo's movies..
i thought this was overall, pretty good! and to the guy who said something about where is the plot?, you shouldn't even watch movies if you can't figure it out!
I've been doing ma since i was 5 and this is what you learn in day one "honor and respect". The whole movie was about honor and respect the school and yourself. Putting material things aside ,such as money and fame. This is now by far one of my favorite movies. and as for the comments of lack of fighting. go to and ma school and ask how many teacher have been in real fights you are tought not to fight but prevail ma's is not all punches and kicks there's a code
