Director Brian De Palma, whose CASUALTIES OF WAR addressed a horrific tragedy that occurred during the Vietnam war, turns his attention to Iraq with an unfortunately similar tale. Inspired by true events, REDACTED follows a group of soldiers who are stationed at a checkpoint in Iraq. Angel Salazar (Izzy Diaz) is an aspiring filmmaker who is intent on capturing his experience on videotape. His fellow soldiers--Reno Flake (Patrick Carroll), Lawyer McCoy (Rob Devaney), and Gabe Blix (Kel O?Neill)--seem to be surprisingly well-adjusted at first, but it isn't long before their true colours come through. When Reno decides to get drunk and harass an Iraqi family, the situation devolves into rape and murder, putting an incredible strain on Lawyer, who wants to expose Reno but doesn?t want to rat out a fellow soldier. ...
In making REDACTED, De Palma embraced the various forms of technology that have allowed soldiers to connect with Americans back home: video cameras, blogs, YouTube, etc. The result is a fictional documentary that feels immediate and experimental, incorporating first-person video perspectives, security cameras, and a variety of other techniques to tell its tragic tale. De Palma is clearly unhappy with the developments in Iraq, and he wants the world to know that he doesn't support the war. REDACTED will certainly never be misconstrued as a pro-war film. This is a challenging work that attacks the very nature of the American presence in Iraq.

Not exactly John Wayne
This is a worthwhile film, obviously low budget, but using an interesting and though not completely innovative approach, one suited to the material, which comes across as at times contrived reportage, and at others quite compelling, though unsophisticated drama. The purpose of this film was not entertainment, so those seeking a more typical war film will be disappointed. Generally not the brutal film I was expecting and one thing I thought interesting was that the central 'incident' is not graphically shown. At the time I felt quite thankful, though looking back I think had it been shown, it would have immeasurably added to the film's indictment of the US military and their polit...
To see Brian De Palma's Redacted is to be reminded of what a 17th century French nobleman, the Duc de Villars, famously asked Louis XIV: "Defend me from my friends; I can defend myself from my enemies."
Redacted means edited, and De Palma, whose Casualties of War is one of the underrated films to come out of the Vietnam conflict, is furious, his director's statement says, at the way "the true story of our Iraq War has been redacted from the Main Stream Corporate Media."
His film, shot quickly with little-known actors, is a fictionalized examination of the before, during and after of an attack a group of American troops were reported to have made on...

uhh..you know , collateral damage is something you always see in war in any country..any place so no surprise there..for example : ..even in latin america ..like said mexico , if you don't stop when they tell you to stop , they just shoot at you point blank ..no matter if you're an adult , youngster, ..or whatever for that matter ..in the efforts of fighting the drug war going on ,on those countries..they just don't care ..it's always the same ..but on the subject of rape for example ..that just another crime , here on usa , ..and other parts of the world as well..if it was up to me I'll had the guilt ones , shot by means of firing escuadron..but then again that's just me ..
good movie,i know the soldiers arent monsters. after being expoed to what they are to, with enemies and civilians mixxed in, and how civilians know things but dont tell troops, its easy 2 see how frustrating it can get there.
watching this made me have a different view on the iraq war. but overall - things happen everyday in life - some good some bad, people live with regrets, and some have no remorse..
