I absolutely adore this film. Have been a big fan of it for many years. I'm not sure how they labeled it a comedy. There may be a few things that are amusing, but it definitely wasn't filmed to be labeled a comedy.

An excellent one on cannibalism. This differs greatly from your average horror film; the interesting choice of an 1840's setting is highly unusual, but works extremely well. The musical score was mostly very intense..and although there were moments where the music had a comedic hint, I feel that this actually helped enhance the insanity that is cannibalism. It could also be viewed as a technique to "soften" the horror element, but I prefer the first theory.

The acting was top notch, very believable; in particular, I thought Robert Carlyle (28 Weeks Later, The World is Not Enough, etc) was brilliant in this one.

And, of course..the plot itself; very well thought-out with many good twists. Although I guessed the first major twist, I didn't see any of the others coming.

Recommended to horror fans who are looking to broaden their horizons beyond the usual simplistic gorefests.

kind of a clash of elements: set on the frontier, described as a survival type movie, often containing comical music, and with a DVD cover design that looks like it should be for a slasher movie, yet frequently contemplative and deep..
