Rachel Getting Married

Rachel Getting Married is a bit of a misnomer. Though the story is structured around the marriage of Rachel, the movie is all about Kym, a neurotic recovering addict and prodigal daughter, played powerfully by Anne Hathaway.

It is a humorous and moving family drama, interspersed with plenty of stark realism and a bit of artificiality. Kym comes home from rehab for the wedding of her sister Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt) and destabilizes the family dynamic, dredging up buried emotions and reigniting long-simmering tensions in ways that are sometimes darkly funny and often poignant.

Family matters
This prodigal daughter movie has done rather poorly at the box office. A pity, because it is a rather good film dealing with the theme of a wayward daughter coping with various personal issues on the occasion of her sister's wedding. To say more would be to introduce spoilers. The acting is impressive from all the principals and Jonathan Demme directs with a sure touch. And a special mention must go to screenwriter Jenny Lumet, who, I imagine, is related to director Sidney Lumet. She has written some great and intelligent dialogue. This is a very American, wealthy, New England family and if you can handle the dynamics peculiar to these american personalities then you are unlikely to be d...

Brimming with energy, elan and the unpredictability of his Something Wild, Jonathan Demme's triumphant Rachel Getting Married may just lay the wedding film to rest, being such a hard act to follow. Amid preparations for a biracial wedding, in comes the bride's time-bomb of a sister (Anne Hathaway), fresh from a nine-month stay at her umpteenth rehab, ready to open every can of worms in the cupboard. [SPOILER] The story line is just abysmal, some of the scenes are torture to watch such as the rehearsal dinner scene. It must be 15 minutes of toasts that is just painful to watch and the acting is terrible. There is another scene where they actually spend time having a race to put dishes in a dishwasher that is equally disgraceful. I realize everyone has different tastes but it is amazing to me that anyone could find this movie redeeming, interesting, fascinating or intriguing

If you have something against GREAT acting performances, inspired casting and stark realism ( I swear the entire movie plays like a wedding video ) then Rachel Getting Married may not be something you'd want to invest time in, just yet.

Wow..wow. 5/5 stars

Next: be in the mood for this movie. Enough said there about that.

Not just like being a fly on the wall. It was like actually being a family member or a family friend at the wedding weekend, thanks to a clever filming style. And within the framework of the script the freedom to ad-lib some also seemed to be part of the magic as well - a possibility anyway. Ann Hathaway - I've never seen her like this. If she wasn't in the running for an academy award of some kind she should have been. I actually forgot that she was Ann during most of this film. Due to the subject matter I cannot say that I liked it - but it was compelling and very well made (true of so many other well made films).
