Queen of Spades, TheA supernatural fantasy based on a story by Pushkin and made during a particularly productive period in British cinema. It is 1806, and the city of St Petersburg is in the grip of gambling fever. As a result many superstitions have have arison, one of them being to do with the evil influence of the titular playing card. A poor captain in the Russian army (Walbrook) hears of an ancient countess (Evans - who really does look incredibly ancient) who is said to have sold her soul in order to win at cards. Obsessively pursuing her may cost him dearly, however. A truly great chiller.
